Ask ten people about the post office salary and you will hear ten numbers: ₹10,000, ₹25,000, ₹45,000. All of them can be right, because India Post has two very different job families. This guide shows what each post earns, what reaches your bank account, and how to move up.
GDS vs Departmental Staff
| GDS (BPM, ABPM, Dak Sevak) | Departmental (MTS, Postman, PA, Inspector) | |
|---|---|---|
| Pay system | TRCA + DA | 7th CPC pay level + DA, HRA, TA |
| Status | Engaged under GDS Rules 2020, not regular central government employees | Regular central government employees |
| Pension | No pension. GDS Gratuity and Service Discharge Benefit Scheme instead | NPS or UPS |
| Work hours | Part-time, up to 5 hours a day | Full-time |
Mixing these two up is the biggest mistake people make when they search for the post office salary.
GDS Post Office Salary
The TRCA slab is ₹12,000–₹29,380 for BPM and ₹10,000–₹24,470 for ABPM and Dak Sevak. TRCA grows 3% every year, subject to conditions. DA is 60% from 1 January 2026.
| Post | Starting TRCA | With DA at 60% |
|---|---|---|
| ABPM / Dak Sevak (4 hrs) | ₹10,000 | ₹16,000 |
| ABPM / Dak Sevak (5 hrs) | ₹12,000 | ₹19,200 |
| BPM (4 hrs) | ₹12,000 | ₹19,200 |
| BPM (5 hrs) | ₹14,500 | ₹23,200 |
4-hour vs 5-hour: Your TRCA level depends on the department’s workload assessment, which is reviewed every three years. It does not depend on how long you actually sit in the office. If your workload has grown, ask for a review.
GDS benefits: GDS Gratuity, Group Insurance, and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (similar to NPS, for those engaged on or after 1 April 2011). Depending on duties, some GDS also get Office Maintenance Allowance, Combined Duty Allowance or Cycle Maintenance Allowance. Incentives for business work such as IPPB are paid separately from TRCA.

“₹30,000 Salary”: How Much Reaches Your Bank?
An MTS in a small town has a gross of ₹30,600. Pension takes ₹2,880, so you get about ₹27,700. That is roughly ₹2,900 less than the headline number, so always budget with in-hand pay.
Why Two People Get Different Salaries
Post + Basic + DA + HRA + TA − Deductions + City = Actual salary
Take two Postmen. One works in a metro (gross ₹41,230), the other in a small town (₹36,890). The gap is ₹4,340 every month for the same job. HRA is 30% of basic in X cities, 20% in Y and 10% in Z. These are the top slabs, and the old 27/18/9% rates no longer apply.
Promotion Roadmap
GDS → MTS → Postman / Mail Guard → Postal / Sorting Assistant → Inspector Posts
- GDS to MTS: 3 years of regular GDS service, no age limit, no minimum education.
- GDS to Postman / Mail Guard: 5 years of regular service, 10th pass, age up to 50.
- Higher steps come through departmental exams.
Example: an ABPM at ₹19,200 becomes an MTS in a small town at ₹30,600. That is ₹11,400 more every month. Eligibility years are sometimes relaxed by one year, so read your circle’s notice each year.
2026 Updates
- DA: 60%. The revision due from July 2026 is still awaited.
- HRA: 30/20/10%.
- UPS: Eligible central employees can choose the Unified Pension Scheme (from 1 April 2025). The government share is 18.5% and a minimum pension of ₹10,000 a month is assured after 10 years.
- 8th Pay Commission: Set up on 3 November 2025 with 18 months to report. The fitment factor and start date are not decided.

- Confirm arrears are added when the pending DA revision is announced.
- Start exam preparation in your second year as GDS.
- Prefer a higher-class city posting when you have a choice.
- Add a voluntary RD on top of the compulsory pension deduction.

A GDS earns about ₹16,000–₹23,000 a month, while departmental staff earn ₹30,000 to over ₹48,000 gross, and less in hand. The exam route from GDS to MTS and Postman is the clearest way to raise your post office salary. Know your numbers and plan your next exam early.
